Dreams have not yet been perfectly identified and explained in history of science though the possible definition has been included as "succession of images, sounds or emotions that pass through mind during sleep" in psychology and its related topics (Oneirology is the scientific study of dreams and their purpose). Religion also considers dreams as a part of life and gives importance to their appearance relating them to a particular incident(s) that may have happened in the past or would (possibly) occur in future. They are considered as a sign of illness or wellness in Ayurveda.
Definition (Upanishad)
"Dreams are the unorganized succession of thoughts passing through mind in the absence of consciousness" and the process is known as dreaming. It is a continuous and spontaneous process which occurs as and when ego merges with self and consequently, consciousness fails to interfere with the process of dreaming, e.g, a story goes on spontaneously in a non-systematic or unusual way where one perceives oneself with pseudo-organs and/or images not related to its real life. Undetermined succession merging numerous images and taking random information forms a dream which continues uninterruptedly like a story and would have not been possible when awakened because the ego and consciousness works as per information, expectations and conceptions (or pre-conceptions) set in mind.
Dreams and their meaning (Mandukya Upanishad)
Though random, dreams are proportional to the stored information and concepts gathered from knowledge and facts (or fiction) obtained through sensory organs which in turn is proportional to circumstances affecting the individual directly or indirectly. Dreams follow the concept of 'more firm more prominent', i.e, they appear somewhat parallel to beliefs and traditions along with the information which is resiliently believed by the individual stored as a preference over other information and facts. Unconsciousness responds proportionally to spontaneity and this forms the basis of identifying dreams and their purpose of appearance.
There are various dream dictionaries recorded in history; and modern science also favors the concept of dreams and their purpose as believed in various religions. Dreams appear spontaneously and their absolute conclusion has been a big challenge ever in the history of mankind though some religious texts specially of Egypt, China and India firmly believes the spontaneity as an indication of circumstances that might have happened in life of an individual or would occur in future. The conclusion of dreams may not be true to be certain but is believed up to variable extent in various religions across the world.
